How to Write a Thesis Strong Enough to Anchor a Whole Essay
A working framework for thesis statements that survive the body paragraphs.
A thesis is a claim, not a topic. 'Climate change in Canada' is a topic. 'Federal carbon pricing outperforms its provincial alternatives because it standardises the price signal' is a thesis.
Strong theses are specific, debatable, and supportable in the word count.
Use the 'so what?' test. If a reader can shrug, it isn't sharp enough.
Place the thesis at the end of the introduction.
Revise after drafting the body - your real argument often emerges in paragraph three.
Avoid hedging language. Stake a position.
Two-sentence theses are fine in graduate writing where context and claim must be separated.
